![]() ![]() Everyone I talk to hates it and we even had an internal motion to stop using it entirely. Today's feature-rich Zoom that's undergone countless "improvements" is worse than Gotomeeting ever was. In my memory - although I'm sure this is wrong - it only had two buttons. Remember your first time you opening Zoom? It opened instantly, had excellent picture quality, and had a minimal UI that was immediately easy. I'm glad to say that was the last nail I ever stepped on. A quick clean-up, an extra tetanus shot, and I was back to swinging the sledgehammer. Within minutes, I vividly remember a 3.5-inch nail piercing my foot through a piece of wood, right through my shoe sole. On day one, I was tasked with demolishing things using a hefty 20-pound sledgehammer. Welcome to the second installment in a series where I explore various aspects of growing Nyla, a no-code + AI solution for Shopify.īefore my digital endeavors, I worked for a residential contractor. Perhaps one day in the future Canva will be considered an “AI product” and then we’ll have our “Canva from Aussie AI” regardless.Īnyway, if you’re interested in more of my AI-related rants, in particular reflections on moats and competitive dynamics, my blog is here: #LinkedInNewsAustralia #BigIdeas2024 #TechWrapUpAU Lastly, I’d be remiss to not mention that Canva - mentioned in the title - are already shipping hard and fast on AI and they’ve been using it for years to power certain parts of the product. Perhaps we simply rest on the laurels of our exports in other areas… I am not sure why the Australian government does not seem to see the importance of developing a strong capability in AI. I’d be very interested to see incentives like those introduced for gaming like the digital games tax offset in which developers could get a rebate of up to 45 cents back for every dollar spent on game development. However, I do agree that the Australian government could do more to spur things along. In Australia we don’t have as high a number of deep AI talent as the US and I wish to see that improve, but we do have extraordinarily talented developers and I have faith in them building amazing products using AI going forward and those businesses have huge potential regardless of the government’s role. To say we won’t have a Canva or similar in AI in Australia neglects how interwoven AI will become in technology startups going forward. I would expect AI be the same given it will be a critical technology to leverage if a company wants to be even remotely competitive. No one says "cloud startup" to refer to companies building on cloud infrastructure - it's just assumed that they are because that has become the standard. In 5-10 years we probably won’t be saying “AI startup” in many cases, because every tech startup will use AI to power aspects of their product. In the AFR on Sunday there was an opinion piece titled “Why there will never be a Canva or Atlassian from Aussie AI”.
